What is “Canvas”?

Canvas LMS is an open and reliable web-based software that allows institutions to manage digital learning, educators to create and present online learning materials and assess student learning, and students to engage in courses and receive feedback about skill development and learning achievement.

How is Canvas used at Louisiana Tech University?

Canvas is the Web-based learning management system used at Louisiana Tech University to enhance class communication, organization and presentation by providing customizable website templates for courses offered. It is designed to provide tools for building online resources to support face-to-face classes or to facilitate classes offered completely online. Faculty can use Canvas with minimal formal instruction or technical skills. Faculty are required to post an electronic version of their syllabus on Canvas (Policy 2205). Beyond that, the degree to which the system is used in a course is determined by the instructor.

The Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) administers Canvas at Louisiana Tech, with technical support from the Computing Center.

Canvas course sites enable faculty to:

  • Sort materials and information into modules for students to better understand course content
  • Share a course syllabus, assignment, discussion and page
  • Assign quizzes and Exams
  • Use the Course Import Tool to bulk-upload pre-existing LMS course packages and/or course materials
  • Provide students with comprehensive feedback on assignment and quiz submissions using SpeedGrader and manage grade reporting in the Canvas Gradebook.
  • Facilitate real-time course interactions using Chat and communicate course news and updates with students using Announcements as well as the Calendar and Syllabus.
