In today's A Word About Wind intelligence briefing, I've looked at whether the growth of conservative and right-wing parties in EU parliamentary elections last week threatens the growth of wind across the continent.French president Emmanuel Macron called snap parliamentary elections on Sunday, while 'green' parties have lost ground in countries including Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. What knock-on effects might this have? What's your take? Here's the piece: https://lnkd.in/eD-GkkWh#europeanunion #renewableenergy #France #Germany #Netherlands #windenergy #electionsA Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report | Tamarindo

RWE has placed a firm order with Vestas for turbines for the 660MW first phase of its Nordseecluster project in Germany. The Danish turbine maker was named preferred supplier for the two-phase 1.6GW scheme in February 2023, and signed the conditional contract for both phases last month. The first phase is set to be made up of 44 15MW turbines, which are due to be commissioned in 2026.Separately, Vestas announced yesterday that it has signed another conditional turbine supply agreement for a two-phase offshore wind project of more than 1GW in northern Europe. This follows a similar announcement that it made on 17th May. Big news from a big tender to end the day! Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, SSE plc and Vattenfall have won the rights to develop 4GW of offshore wind capacity in the Netherlands.A consortium led by SSE Renewables, and including pension funds ABP and APG, has won the rights to develop the 2GW Noordzeker project on the IJmuiden Ver Alpha site. The project is set to include artificial reefs at 75% of the turbines to support marine creatures and build biodiversity.CIP and Vattenfall have won the rights to develop the 2GW Zeevonk II project on the IJmuiden Ver Beta site. This is set to include 50MW of floating solar capacity and be linked to 1GW of green hydrogen production capacity planned at the Port of Rotterdam.Martijn Hagens, CEO at Vattenfall Netherlands, said: "Combining wind, solar and hydrogen, this project will create a state-of-the-art energy system and support further decarbonization of industries and our society."Felix Pahl, partner at CIP, said: "The award of IJmuiden Ver Beta is a milestone for CIP’s Energy Transition Fund and an important step in realizing an integrated energy system in the North Sea."The Netherlands Enterprise Agency has announced the results for the two projects in the North Sea this afternoon. These are the largest offshore wind farms approved thus far in the Dutch North Sea.Rob Jetten, Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy, said: "Noordzeker and Zeevonk II have great plans for these new offshore wind farms. It shows that wind farms and nature can go well together and that offshore wind with smart solutions can help reduce pressure on the onshore power grid."Jetten also acknowledged market conditions have become more complicated. No doubt everyone in European offshore wind will be poring over details of the winning bids in the coming hours and days.Full story: https://lnkd.in/e3PRS2Xt#offshorewind #Netherlands #tenderA Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report | Tamarindo

Is Germany poised to accelerate its offshore wind rollout? 🇩🇪 That is the intention of the country's Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency), which has published a draft development plan for how Germany could reach 60GW of installed offshore wind capacity in the North and Baltic Seas by 2037.The BSH said it wanted to identify areas that could benefit from accelerated permitting under the EU Renewable Energy Directive. The plan is open for consultation until 8th August, with a final version due by the end of 2024.Helge Heegewaldt, BSH president, said working with neighbouring countries had enabled it to identify areas for 10GW of additional offshore wind capacity in German waters. He said: "Inrecent years, together with the other responsible bodies of the federal administration, we have exchanged ideas intensively with our Danish and Dutch neighbours. Our common goal was to gain additional areas for the nationaloffshoreexpansion targets and at the same time ensure the safety and ease of international shipping."Plan here: https://lnkd.in/eVT8R_5m#offshorewind #Germany #NorthSeaA Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report | Tamarindo

Mon dieu! President Emmanuel Macron has called a snap election in France following the performance of the country's National Rally party in EU elections. The French government has recently made some big commitments to offshore wind: 18GW of installed capacity by 2035 and 45GW by 2050. Is that going to be affected by any prospect of political change?Nice calm start to the week. Buckle up, everyone! 🇫🇷#offshorewind #election #FranceA Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report | Tamarindo
