Ladies, do you know how to shop for clothes for your portrait?It’s time for me to do a new portrait of myself. I’m in the final stages of producing a coffee table book about families I’ve worked with over the last 2 decades, and I need a new location portrait for it. For location portraits, one of the most challenging things is getting the clothing right. Even for me – and I help clients with this all the time! Shopping on the internet, it seems like you should just be able to do some searching, find what you want, and order it. But it’s always harder than I think it should be. Here are 3 things I’ve discovered while shopping for clothes for my portrait:1.Start with styles that will work for YOUR BODY TYPE. For example, there’s no sense in deciding on a pair of high waist pants and a short top if you’re pear or apple-shaped. I.e., with my body shape, I usually do best with lower-rise pants and a top that hits around my waist, and fit and flare style dresses are my friend. 2. Choose a couple of different types of outfits that you might like to see yourself in – perhaps a dress, and pants and a sweater. I started off a couple weeks ago looking for a white dress, as my original plan was to do my portrait on the beach. However, since it’s September, everything I liked was either gone completely or not available in my size. So I pivoted to something in navy, which is much easier to find in the fall than white. 3.Look for clothing pieces that are in style. You may have to be flexible here. You understand what I mean – fashion is like a carousel. One season something is everywhere you look,and the next it’s nowhere to be found. Last week I had decided on a boatneck sweater as an option for this portrait. That wouldn’t be hard to find- or so I thought. But apparently boatnecks are not in style right now. So I’m going with a v neck or a crewneck. Hope this helps you when you’re ready for your next portrait, whether as an individual or family. I enjoy fashion, colors and styling. I like to dress to entertain myself.I get my inspirations from Pinterest, designers and fashion magazines. I love seeing women out on the streets of San Diego and see how they put outfits together. Fashion is a way for me to put colors and styles together. Discovering what is comfortable and classy together. Fashion creates confidence for me and enhances my mood. I find joy in choosing outfits that make me feel good about myself and confident.Dressing up boosts my confidence and helps me face the day with a positive attitude. When I feel about myself my overall demeanor is positive.Fashion is a way for me to self-express myself. Artists use colors and canvases, I use clothing, accessories and beauty products. Everyone has their own style and way of presenting themselves. My favorite outfits usually have black or grey in them, well fitting, soft fabric and have some type of pop of color. Do you have a favorite outfit, a power outfit? You know that outfit that you feel like you can tackle anything.
