The Manhattan Mercury from Manhattan, Kansas (2024)

Friday, June 29, 1990 LOCAL The Manhattan Mercury Big Lakes to raise new director's pay Amy E. Lignitz Staff Writer The Big Lakes Regional Council would rather spend more money to find a good director for the vacant post than suffer the effects of a bad director. The multi-county group decided Thursday to set a salary range substantially higher than the council paid former director Steve Ernst. Ernst resigned last month, and told Riley County Commissioners he was taking a better-paying job in Nebraska. Ernst, who started working for Big Lakes in June 1989, had been accused of mishandling a grant earmarked to clean up the Fairmont area.

Riley County had hired Big Lakes to administer the $300,000 Community Development Block Grant, but in April ended the contract and took over grant administration. "In Riley County we had a situation where we paid twice for the administration of a grant program," said Riley County Commissioner John Sjo. "I want to see us get someone who can handle it this time. The council comprised of representatives from Pottawatomie, Riley, Marshall, Clay and Geary counties set the director's salary range at $28,000 to $40,000 based on experience. The council paid Ernst $26,000.

"We need to consider increasing the salary to draw someone who can look into the future and said Pottawatomie representative Ross VanderHamm. "We're not going to do it with $26,000 a Representatives from Geary, Marshall and Pottawatomie counties agreed. Potawatomie County representative Robert Rawson said, "If you don't pay 'em, you ain't going to get In a related matter, the council approved the higher of two proposed 1991 budgets. Council members said paying more for a new director should be tied to counties' willingness to spend more money. "I don't believe it's consistent to hire a good person and expect them to do anything" if the council doesn't give them a big Births Young and Kwan Lee, F-2 Marie, born June 27.

"It's important when (prospective applicants) call, to give the impression this body is interested in the future and will do what it can to get something." The proposed budget calls for $114,767 in expenditures and $63,141 in revenue collected from counties, which will be combined with grants and other income. Proposed county contributions, which are based on county assessments, are: Riley and Pottawatomie, Geary, Clay, and Marshall, $6,946. The smaller proposed budget had called for a total of $50,000 to come from county contributions. Big Lakes member counties must approve the budget. Staff photo by Rod Mikinski Delicate strings L.

Lignitz Staff Writer The Riley County Commission decided Thursday not to hold a jail bond election in August, but stopped short of making a formal decision to hold the election in November.

Commission chairman Dick Jepsen and commissioner Wilton Thomas said they were not ready to make final decisions about the proposed law enforcement facility. Commissioner John Sjo was absent. "I just want to do a little more fine-tuning before we put it on a ballot," said Thomas. "I think it's in the public interest not to try to put it on the August ballot." Jepsen agreed, saying the commission needs more information on the final design and cost before it puts the issue on the ballot. In making his motion not to put the issue on the August primary ballot, Thomas did not mention the possibility of putting the issue on the November general election ballot.

"There was no need to nail it down," Thomas said after the meeting. "I intentionally didn't state it for November. It's a fairly stable bet that's what it'll be." A week ago, commissioners had discussed the likelihood of going against their original intention to hold the election on the proposed $5.9 million project in August, and holding it in M. County Clerk Ilene Colbert had indicated this spring that the commission should tell her by June 1 whether the bond election would be held in August so she could have time to prepare the primary election ballots.
