Jeff Davis has spent more than 30 years doing what he describes as the “coolest job in the world.” 🔔🎶There are only six full-time paid university carollinists in North America, and Davis is one of them. His workplace is rare, too: It’s UC Berkeley’s iconic Campanile, one of the world’s tallest clock-and-bell towers with a 61-bell grand carillon at the center. In addition to his weekly live performances during the school year, he's also built one of the world's most extensive and prominent carillon instruction programs and has taught over 200 students how to play the bells.A June 29-30 carillon festival at Berkeley — free and open to the public — will celebrate Davis with an hourlong recital each day at noon and 2 p.m. About a dozen carillonists, including Davis, will perform.Berkeley News recently asked Davis about the program he’s built on campus, how he juggles teaching and composing, what it’s like to work in a bell tower, and what’s ahead at Berkeley for carillon instruction and the historic and rapidly aging instrument.#UCBerkeley #BerkeleyNewshttps://lnkd.in/gBGd9wbq

#BerkeleyVoices: Justin Davidson is an associate professor in #UCBerkeley's Department of Spanish and Portuguese. A sociolinguist, Davidson studies language variation and language change over time.“It’s groups in power, its discourses and collective communities, that sort of socially determine what kinds of words and what kinds of language are acceptable and unacceptable,” says Davidson.Davidson talks about those changes and how they affect communication and meaning-making in three-part series about language in the U.S. ⬇️• A linguist’s quest to legitimize U.S. Spanish: https://lnkd.in/gcwnWXyF• A language divided: https://lnkd.in/g68mV7g5• One brain, two languages: https://lnkd.in/gxNUrgpr

Hao Zhang M.A. ’05, Ph.D. '07 is one of the innovators of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning methods in financial forecasting — and he credits his time in as formative.Zhang chose to celebrate the role Berkeley faculty played in his life by creating the Zhang Family Endowed Professorship, which helps junior faculty in EECS thrive.“The mentorship and support I received was beyond anything I could have imagined,” he says. “To now be in a position to give back — to help young faculty develop in their careers and contribute to advancements in Al and computer vision — it’s both humbling and exciting.”Read more about Zhang and the Endowed Professorship: https://lnkd.in/gAQn9dEa

Over the weekend, Claudia Sheinbaum became Mexico’s first female president, but did you know she has Berkeley ties?In the 90s, Sheinbaum was a researcher at Berkeley Lab for four years, where she studied energy use in Mexico’s transportation and building sectors. Also known as “la Doctora,” Sheinbaum’s scientific background informs her approach to politics, and she is said to take a data-driven approach to her political strategy. While her election is a first for Mexico, it’s far from surprising, said Margaret Chowning, a UC Berkeley history professor who studies and writes about female politicians in Latin America. “Women have historically been accepted as moral leaders nationally and political leaders at the local level,” Chowning said. “They led village rebellions in the colonial period and were leaders of the fight against secularism. … I see this as, in some ways, a pretty natural outcome for a country that committed officially decades ago to increasing women’s presence in government.” #UCBerkeley #BerkeleyNewshttps://bit.ly/4aQJo54
